Its botanical name is Hibiscus Sabdariffa. Nigeria is the second largest exporter in Africa,
behind Sudan, in terms of quality and volume. Harvest period begins in October of every year.
The petals are mostly dark red in colour, sundried in the open and thereafter processed
(cleaned and bagged) for export.
Hibiscus flowers are traded in three forms, whole flowers, siftings and fine cuts.
It is a medicinal herb and health food product, used in the pharmaceutical, beverage and
confectionery industries. Hibiscus is known to be a relief for high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
It also cures liver problems and reduces the risk of cancer. In Mexico, itβs used as a garnish and delicacy.
