Dry Split Ginger
Also known as Zingiber Officinale, ginger is highly valued for its pungency, aroma,
high oil and oleoresin contents. Nigeria is the third largest producer of this product
in the world with an annual production of 110,000 MT. The harvest starts in October and runs until May.
The fresh rhizome is usually split into fairly large pieces and sundried in the open.
This process enables the moisture drop to a tolerable level, thus avoiding mouldy splits.
Because of its pungency and aroma, it’s used as a spicing agent in the production of bread,
biscuits, tea, beer, etc. When extracted, the oil is used as an additive in the production of confectioneries,
perfumes, beverages and pharmaceutical products. The products medicinal qualities help to calm nausea
and aid digestion amongst others.
