Gum Arabic

Gum Arabic lumps are dry exudates from the tropical trees of acacia senegal, acacia seyal and combretum. There are three major types, namely grades 1, 2 and 3. It’s traded in three basis forms – lumps, siftings and powder. Nigeria is the second largest producer in the world, behind Sudan. It’s cultivated in the wild, with harvest started in December of every year.

It its processed form, gum arabic finds applications as an emulsifier, thickener, binder, stabilizer and a preserving agent in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, textile and printing industries. It’s edible and essentially used as a stabilizer in soft drinks, binder in cakes and ink in printing. It also finds relevance in the production of paints, glue, cosmetics, textiles and other industrial application.
