Sesame Seeds
Sesame Seed is a small flat seed popular for its culinary and medicinal values
Nigeria produces about 500,000 MT of natural sesame seeds per annum, and ranks
third in the global production, behind China and India. The season begins in September of
every year. Nigeria has two major types of sesame seeds, namely Kano and Benue.
The Benue type is smaller in size, lighter in colour with lower oil content.
The Kano type is much bigger in size, darker in colour and has higher oil content.
They both appeal to different markets, depending on their applications.
Sesame is used as an ingredient in the production of margarine, sardine, corned beef, etc.
It’s used to garnish and decorate confectioneries such as cake, bread, biscuit, burger, sweet, etc.
The extracts are used in the production of cosmetics, soap, pharmaceutical and animal feeds.
